Uninterrupted power supplies or UPS are essential because they supply electricity to some electronics and appliances in case of power failures. UPS also acts as a protection or insurance policy against data and equipment loss and against interruptions for homes and businesses. However, as with most other electrical or electronic apparatus, UPS systems can sometimes encounter problems. This article provides information on which actions should be taken in UPS system failures and when to turn to a professional electrician for repair.

Troubleshooting Basic UPS Problems

As earlier stated, many minor UPS issues can be solved without calling an electrician or an engineer. Try these basic troubleshooting steps first:

UPS Not Turning On

- Make sure the UPS is connected to a working socket outlet and confirm that the socket outlet is ‘alive.’ Plug something else into the outlet such as a phone charger to check if it is the problem.

- Check that the battery of UPS is placed in the proper manner in case UPS has a replaceable battery.

- Pay attention to whether the UPS has an ON/OFF switch and make sure it is located in the ON position.

- Try to rest the UPS by disconnecting it from the wall and battery, and after 30 seconds, reconnect the UPS to the wall and battery.

UPS Not Providing Backup Power

- Check on the backup feature by disconnecting power on a device while it remains connected to the UPS.

- You can check the UPS battery by looking at the indicator lights or display screen and look for any error codes. As for the indicator lights, it can be a rule of thumb that red means something is wrong.

- Replace the old battery if there is one, or carry out tests on the existing battery. Durability: The average duration for this type of chair is about 3-5 years.

UPS Beeping Continuously

- Go to the UPS display panel to find the codes that may be showing on the panel to warn of the problem. Beeping is possible due to overload, over-temperature, and malfunctioning batteries.

- The UPS should be placed in an area where it has ample space for ventilation and should not be covered by any objects. Some vehicles have warning beeps when an area is overheated.

- Try plugging the UPS into another outlet on another circuit, as this might solve the problem. It should also be noted that an overloaded circuit can trigger UPS alarms.

When to Call an Electrician

Although most of the problems can be solved by do it yourself-ing, there is some UPS failure cases that needs the expert electrician for repair.

UPS Produces Burning Smell or Smoke

Any smell of burnt or smoke coming from the UPS means that there is a failure in the electrical system of the UPS or that some of the internal components have overheated. Simply switch the gadget off and get in touch with a professional electrician. As we have seen it is hazardous to carry out some repairs on a defective unit because of the dangers involved such as electrocution.

Repeated Circuit Breaker Tripping

Most of the times when one tries to reset the circuit breaker and there is no effect on the flow of power through the UPS unit, it may be due to a wiring short in existence in the system. Consult an electrician to conduct a safe assessment of the UPS wiring and correct any dangerous issues identified on the wiring.

Water Leaks Into UPS Housing

Any possibility of water entering the UPS enclosure is a significant electrical danger if there are some signs like sparking inside the enclosure or smoke. Turn off the main power supply from the breaker and refer any mishaps such as electrocution hazards and equipment mishaps to an emergency electrician.

UPS Internal Hardware Failure

UPS devices have capacitors and batteries that possess electrostatic charges that may be dangerous even when the device is disconnected from the power source. Do not try to open or fix UPS internal circuits if you are not an electronics expert. Thus, it needs to be brought to an authorized UPS service center or a qualified electrician.

When in Doubt, Call a Professional

Even the essential UPS operational troubles that may arise, for instance, power and battery issues, are not complicated projects that any homeowner can handle independently. However, if there is such a problem as burning odors, smoke, and water leakage in the UPS, turn it off and call an electrician.
Handling dangerous UPS failures is not only extremely dangerous but a death trap, and so, it is highly unwise to consider dealing with them without adequate training and protective gear. When conducting any repair work involving an electrical system, safety comes first all the time.
